Question
Will the Cabinet Minister clarify whether repairs to the Wales Coastal Path between Briton Ferry and Aberavon are eligible for support under the infrastructure priority of the Local Growth Fund, and whether any application for such funding has been made or is under consideration?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability (Llyr Gruffydd)
The Welsh Government has received a copy of the borehole investigation survey. However, as the investigation was commissioned by Neath Port Talbot Council, it is not owned by the Welsh Government and therefore cannot be shared or published by us. Any requests for access to the survey should be directed to Neath Port Talbot Council.
While Neath Port Talbot Council took the decision to close the section of the Wales Coast Path between Briton Ferry and Aberavon, the Welsh Government is continuing discussions with the Council regarding the future of this section of the route.
A clear barrier has been installed to prevent access to the closed section of the Wales Coast Path. The Welsh Government is currently assessing whether any amendments or additional measures are necessary in respect of the land it owns.
The core objectives and investment priorities for the Local Growth Fund in Wales are set out in the Fund’s Investment Plan, which is available on the Welsh Government website. Within this framework, the Welsh Government has devolved both funding and decision-making responsibilities to regional bodies. During the 2026-27 transition year, these responsibilities rest with the lead local authority for each region. Regional infrastructure is an eligible investment priority under the fund. However, decisions on which projects receive funding are a matter for regional bodies, which will determine investment priorities based on regional needs and opportunities, in line with the Fund’s objectives in Wales. Further information on the status of, or potential funding opportunities for, specific projects should be sought from Swansea City Council, which is the lead local authority for the South West region during the 2026–27 transition year.
The Welsh Government did not take the decision to close the Wales Coast Path between Briton Ferry and Aberavon and has not undertaken an assessment of the impact of the closure.
