Question
What plans does the Welsh Government have to increase the number of councillors from one to two for the Llanwern ward, Newport?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning (Siân Gwenllian)
Electoral arrangements are determined by a statutory review process as set out in the Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru etc. Act 2013. The Democracy and Boundary Commission Cymru has a duty to keep under review the electoral arrangements for principal councils. As part of the review process, the Welsh Government has no role in determining the number of councillors to represent a ward. Considerations around the number of councillors for Llanwern would fall within the statutory review programme, under which all principal council electoral arrangements must be reviewed at least once every 12 years.
