Question
What consideration has the Cabinet Minister given to introducing measures equivalent to England's new "Benedict's Law" allergy guidance for schools, including whole-school allergy policies, staff allergy awareness training, individual healthcare plans for pupils with allergies, and emergency spare adrenaline auto injectors?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language (Anna Brychan)
The Welsh Government is aware of developments in England regarding ‘Benedict’s Law’ and is currently reviewing relevant statutory and supplementary guidance, including guidance on the use of emergency adrenaline auto-injectors in maintained schools. We will consider Benedict’s Law, alongside wider developments across the UK, to inform future policy in Wales.
In the meantime, Welsh Government sets out clear expectations for maintained schools and local authorities through its statutory guidance, supporting learners with healthcare needs in schools statutory guidance.
We have also published specific guidance for schools on the use of emergency adrenaline auto-injectors to treat anaphylaxis, supporting schools to respond effectively to allergic reactions and help keep learners safe.
