Question
What steps is the Welsh Government taking to prevent the spread of the bluetongue virus at upcoming agricultural shows around Wales, following the announcement of a confirmed case in Staffordshire?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Rural Resilience and Sustainability (Llyr Gruffydd)
Bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) vaccines were licensed in Wales on 28 February 2025. Vaccination records have been collected since March 2025. Between 1 March 2025 and 1 July 2026, veterinary practices reported the vaccination of 190,898 cattle and 113,321 sheep in Wales against BTV-3.
The Welsh Government works closely with key stakeholders such as the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society to communicate the latest Bluetongue guidance and information, which is available at GOV.WALES.
Agricultural show organisers are responsible for issuing and monitoring compliance with their own disease prevention and control requirements for exhibitors and competitors.
