Question
Will the Cabinet Minister outline how the NHS in Wales is tackling female genital mutilation (FGM)?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Social Care, Mental Health and Women’s Health (Delyth Jewell)
The NHS in Wales tackles FGM as part of its wider response to violence against women and girls. The Violence Against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence (Wales) Act 2015 explicitly includes FGM within the definition of gender-based violence. NHS bodies, as relevant authorities under the Act, have a duty to contribute to the prevention of violence against women and girls, improve protection for victims, and support those affected.
In addition, the Violence against Women, Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence National Training Framework: Statutory Guidance, sets out the statutory requirements for training across the public service and specialist third sector in Wales. Health Boards and NHS Trusts are responsible for ensuring staff receive training appropriate to their role to identify, respond to and signpost victims of all forms of VAWDASV, including FGM.
