Question
Further to WQ99485, will the Welsh Government commission an assessment of asbestos-containing components in wind turbines situated on (a) the Welsh Government estate and (b) land managed by Natural Resources Wales and, if so, when does it expect that assessment to be completed and will the findings be published?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy (Adam Price)
The Welsh Government does not currently have plans to commission a specific assessment of asbestos-containing components in wind turbines situated on either the Welsh Government estate or land managed by Natural Resource Wales.
Health and safety regulation of asbestos is largely reserved to the UK Government. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Great Britain’s workplace health and safety regulator sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions, is the primary regulator responsible for enforcing the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and other workplace asbestos requirements in Wales. HSE is aware of the issue and has been working with industry and supply-chain partners to determine the extent of any affected equipment and implement appropriate control measures.
