Question
Will the Cabinet Minister provide an update on draft plans for a designated funding stream to support the travel and accommodation costs of patients travelling outside of Wales for specialist cancer treatment, as set out in the Welsh Government's 100 day plan?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Health and Care (Mabon ap Gwynfor)
I recognise the unique challenges for patients who have to travel outside of Wales to receive specialist treatment, alongside the wider emotional and financial impact on families and carers. We are committed to ensuring that no one has to endure financial hardship from accessing such services. This is something I wish to address through the National Cancer Strategy announced on 15 July.
As confirmed in my announcement, my officials are working on the introduction of a travel and accommodation fund. Next steps include engagement with UK governments, partner organisations, and key stakeholders including third sector organisations to consider its potential scope, requirements and service impact. This engagement is underway and will continue over the coming weeks.
