Given the reduction in COVID-19 cases and the success of the vaccination programme in Wales, what consideration has the Welsh Government given to removing requirements for the use of face coverings in secondary schools in Wales?

Our operational guidance for schools and settings currently advises that face coverings should be worn by learners in secondary schools when social distancing cannot be maintained. Our guidance also advises that face coverings should be worn by staff in all settings when social distancing cannot be maintained.
This is one of a range of measures put in place to ensure schools remain safe environments for in-school learning for staff and learners, alongside prompt testing and isolation on symptoms and a range of other non-pharmaceutical interventions.
Throughout the pandemic, we have followed the scientific evidence and continue to keep all policies under review, taking a careful and cautious approach as we continue to relax restrictions. This includes our policy on the use of face coverings.
We recognise that there are potential adverse impacts related to use of face coverings in schools and settings, and our current advice on their use will therefore be in place for the minimum amount of time necessary. We have committed that any changes to our policies will be made in consultation with key stakeholders including trade unions, local authorities, staff and learners.
