We have provided funding of £952,406 through the Safe Routes in Communities Grant to Cardiff Council for their ‘Canton’ scheme. This is the second year of funding, which will enable the Council to complete the implementation of highways improvements to improve walking and cycling infrastructure in the Canton community. A focus is being placed on improving safe and sustainable access to a number of schools. These are Ysgol Treganna, Ysgol Pwll Coch, Lansdowne Primary School, Radnor Primary School and Fitzalan High School (existing and proposed new build).
Residents were notified of the public consultation for highway improvements to Lansdowne Road, by post. I understand that there have been some recent local concerns regarding the Council’s plans to proceed with the implementation of the scheme and these will need to be taken up with the Council directly.
Under the Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) regime set out in the Environment Act 1995, Local Authorities have a duty to assess and manage public health risks from air pollution. This includes carrying out regular reviews and assessments of air quality in their area against air quality objectives. Cardiff Council has undertaken monitoring at a number of locations which indicate air pollution levels at these locations do not exceed the air quality standards for nitrogen dioxide.
