Remote consultations are a feature of how people can access treatment and are here to stay. They allow access to timely and convenient appointments without having to leave the house.
The Welsh Government-commissioned National Survey for Wales, published in October, reported that 73% of respondents found it easy to get a GP appointment at a convenient time and 88% were satisfied with the care received.
A joint letter was issued to the GP profession from Welsh Government, NHS Wales, GPC Wales and RCGP Wales on 16 July. It set out the expectations on GPs including ensuring good communication with patients, offering digital services and continuing with effective triage.
A joint decision between the individual and GP practice will help to determine if the issue can be dealt with remotely or whether a face-to-face appointment is required. If a face-to-face appointment is clinically necessary, GPs will make arrangements for a person to attend the practice. Clinical triage is a key tool to ensure people receive the care they need, at the right time, from the right healthcare professional.
Data about the cost of treatment and hospital admissions from primary care is not held by Welsh Government.
