Will the Minister make a statement on the use of hemp biofuel in Wales?

Atebwyd gan Minister for Climate Change
Hemp is a versatile substance which can be used as a biofuel, a fabric, and in pharmaceuticals and food. It also has potential as a raw material in construction products such as hempcrete and insulation, which can help to decarbonise our buildings.
The Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme is a UK wide research and innovation programme to explore the potential of crops, including hemp, as biomass feedstock.
Aberystwth University holds Home Office licences for producing and processing hemp. They are exploring potential uses for hemp, although these are primarily uses other than biofuel. This work can help inform our understanding of the relative environmental and economic value the various uses of hemp might offer.
Research into other crops for biofuels is also underway in Wales. Aberystwyth’s ‘Miscanspeed’ project has received support from the Biomass Feedstocks Innovation Programme to look at breeding of high yielding, resilient Miscanthus varieties for potential as biofuel.
