What is the Welsh Government doing to protect the historic Monks’ Trod in mid Wales?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd
Welsh Government is aware that there are surfacing and drainage issues on the Monks Trod byway.
Powys, Ceredigion and NRW are working together to try to resolve these problems. Welsh Government will continue to assist where appropriate.
The issues at Monks Trod are a complicated matter due to the fragile habitats in the area. An ecologist has recently carried out a Habitat Regulations Assessment. This has highlighted that there are no suitable routes on the Powys / Ceredigion border to divert the byway and further environmental damage would likely result if it were to be fully closed.
There is a permanent closure in place for four wheel vehicles. Two wheel vehicles can now use it again as long as they stay on the line of the byway. Powys are working with NRW and Dyfed Powys Police to ensure this messaging is shared with users.
