What is the Welsh Government doing to support the Welsh fishing industry?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Minister for Rural Affairs and North Wales, and Trefnydd
The introduction of the Whelk Fishing Permit (Wales) Order 2021 was a major step forward for sustainable fisheries management in Wales and I remain committed to introducing similar evidence based flexible management regimes for a range of other stocks, to enable more timely interventions which will safeguard the marine environment and the fishing industry in Wales.
I recognise it has been a difficult time for the seafood industry and this is why I supported the Welsh presence at Seafood Expo Global 2022 in April in Barcelona. Being at this event, gives our businesses the platform to meet new and existing customers and suppliers and is an opportunity to showcase premium shellfish from Welsh waters to a global audience. The Welsh seafood sector also benefitted from a Welsh Government funded showcase at Dubai Expo in February this year.
I have secured over 250 tonnes of additional fish quota opportunity following our departure from the EU and this is worth, at a first sale value, more than £0.75 million to the Welsh fishing industry on an ongoing annual basis.
EMFF funding has been made available for businesses wishing to complete investments before December 2023. Marine and Fisheries funding proposals for this financial year are under development. Officials have embarked on further engagement with stakeholders to ensure co-production of a scheme.
