What assessment has the Minister made of the success of bike share companies such as Nextbike, and their impact on travel?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Deputy Minister for Climate Change
The Welsh Government provided grant funding for the bike share scheme operating in Cardiff, and the interoperable scheme later introduced in the Vale of Glamorgan. The performance of these schemes is monitored directly by the local authorities.
Data provided by Nextbike to Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Councils, which has been shared with the Welsh Government, shows that by September 2022 there have been over 1.63million rentals since the scheme started in 2018 in Cardiff and in 2020 with a small number of stations in the Vale of Glamorgan, with the average trip length per rental being around 2km. This indicates that the scheme is likely to have enabled over 3.2million km to be travelled by bike.
