Will the Minister outline the Welsh Government's position on fusion drilling to harness energy?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Minister for Climate Change
The use of fusion technology (electro-magnetic waves to super-heat rock) to drill for extremely deep geothermal energy is experimental with field trials not planned until 2024 and a goal for a full-scale plant in 2026. There are inevitably technical challenges in achieving the goal of drilling to a depth of around 20 kilometres and there are significant uncertainties regarding its environmental impact.
We would need to review the evidence from the industry led trials and have a clear understanding of the risks, benefits, costs and uncertainties before developing a position. In the meantime, we are fortunate to have a range of proven technologies and natural resources available to us to generate renewable electricity and heat, which are the focus on my policy and delivery programmes.
