The Water Resources (Control of Agricultural Pollution) (Wales) Regulations 2021, introduced by the Welsh Government, prohibit the application of certain materials to land if there is a significant risk of pollution occurring. This includes agricultural and non-agricultural materials which contain pathogens and weather conditions must be considered when determining the risk. Farms are also required to provide sufficient storage for any slurry produced, to ensure it can be applied to land when conditions are suitable, to prevent pollution.
This work is being carried out in collaboration with Cefin Campbell, the Plaid Cymru designated member, as part of the Co-operation Agreement between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru.
The Welsh Government also works closely with water companies on pollution issues. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Emergency Planning teams respond to weather warnings and have a variety of pre-emptive flood mitigation measures they can deploy, in addition to infrastructure developments to prevent pollution in the case of extreme weather events.
