What steps have been taken by the Welsh Government to mitigate the impact of gastrointestinal nematodes?

The Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA), our delivery partner, are providing laboratory capability to diagnose parasitic disease, including through the work of the Centre of Expertise for Extensively Managed Livestock in Carmarthen where the parasitology lab is located. The APHA issue communications, educational materials, and alerts regarding gastrointestinal nematodes via the Endemic Disease Alert System. Welsh Government ensures this communication is shared with practitioners and that surveillance data is enhanced though provision of government-funded testing when the disease is at its peak, as seen with free testing for Haemonchus spp. between July and October 2022 and survey of first-grazing-season cattle.
