How many hospitals in Wales have been built using reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Minister for Health and Social Services
Based on the outcome of investigations to date, two main hospitals have been identified as having elements of their construction that used Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) - Nevill Hall and Withybush. As survey works are being undertaken, mitigation and safety measures are being introduced where appropriate. Health Boards are required to ensure patient, staff and visitor safety is of paramount importance.
All NHS organisations were contacted in February 2023 to provide assurance from specialist accredited consultants, to both the organisation and the Welsh Government about the presence of RAAC on their estate. Whilst this work is on-going, an updated position on RAAC is expected to be available later this summer.
Once organisations are better informed as to the presence of RAAC, my officials will provide me with further advice around next steps.
