What action is the Welsh Government taking to ensure that Wales’s military history is appropriately included in the new education curriculum?

The Humanities Area and the Curriculum seeks to enable learners to develop an understanding of the complex and diverse nature of societies, past and present. The statutory guidance which all schools must consider, specifically includes conflict as an important concept for learning in history. The guidance makes it clear that schools should consider how to select a range of contexts which allow learners to consider different concepts, including conflict.
The Curriculum for Wales requires schools to design their own curriculum and it empowers schools to design a curriculum which meets the needs of their learners and their locality, within a clear national framework. This could include studying military history. When schools do select specific topics, it is important that such learning supports learners’ wider understanding, for example in this case, about conflict, identity, learners’ heritage and sense of place.
