Are maternity services in Wales considered to fall into the category of planned and unscheduled care?

Atebwyd gan Minister for Health and Social Services
Maternity and neonatal services, as well as a number of other services such as critical care, are not classed as either planned or unscheduled care. This is due to the unpredictability of these services and the care that may need to be provided.
Annual maternity and birth statistical summaries are published on the Welsh Government’s website, with data covering areas including antenatal care, smoking and birth outcomes. More detailed information about the maternity indicators data set can be accessed on the StatsWales website.
Assurance around maternity services is undertaken at the Integrated Quality and Delivery Board meetings which are held with each health board and assessment is undertaken as part of the revised Oversight and Escalation Framework.
