What steps is the Minister taking to combat river pollution in Wales?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Minister for Climate Change
The Welsh Government is leading an integrated catchment approach to combat river pollution, focusing on multi-sector co-operation. We have established the Better River Quality Taskforce to focus on storm overflows and drive improvements in river water quality. We are also making Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) mandatory for almost all new developments. This will relieve pressure on the sewer network by redirecting and slowing down the speed at which surface water enters the sewer system and help ensure storm overflows are only used as a last resort.
The water quality of our rivers is impacted by a huge number of complex and interrelated factors, with many sectors having a role to play. Welsh Government is therefore advocating for a ‘Team Wales’ approach to improving water quality. I am pleased that we continue to have strong engagement with government, regulators, and all relevant sectors in Wales working together through our River Pollution Summit process. The next Summit will take place in March, chaired by NRW.
