Will the Cabinet Secretary confirm whether the deposit-return scheme is still on track to be launched in 2025?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs
A joint statement on the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) was published by all UK nations on 25 April 2024 outlining the interoperability positions and agreement to delay the start date of the scheme to October 2027. I have also published a written statement on the development of DRS in Wales.
In considering the start date of the scheme, engagement has been undertaken with a range of stakeholders, including industry partners, and we have also drawn from international experience of introducing DRS schemes. This has highlighted the importance of sufficient time for preparations, for example to install the infrastructure, in order for the scheme to be introduced in an effective and well-managed way.
