What measures is the Welsh Government implementing to mitigate delays in morgues across North Wales to expedite the timely release of deceased individuals to their families?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
NHS mortuaries faced sustained pressure throughout the winter period, in part due to the number of deaths registered each week in Wales consistently exceeding the expected number. I am aware that in some instances, delays have been experienced in the release of deceased individuals, and I apologise for the additional distress this may have caused affected families.
The National Pathology Programme’s Anatomical Pathology Compliance and Workforce Group, which is comprised of NHS mortuary designated individuals, is currently reviewing all Welsh health board standard operating procedures for the release of the deceased to ensure compliance with Human Tissue Authority standards and equity for bereaved families seeking to progress funeral arrangements.
