What discussions has the Welsh Government held with the UK Government regarding the feasibility of nationalising the Port Talbot Steelworks?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning
The Welsh Government has had no specific discussions with the UK Government regarding the potential for nationalisation of the Port Talbot Steelworks. The Welsh Government was not party to the funding agreement negotiations between Tata and the previous UK Government, despite our repeated requests to be involved in the discussions.
Given that the blast furnaces at the site are now closed, and with support from the UK Government Tata is moving forward with its transition to more sustainable and low carbon steelmaking to secure the future of steel making in Port Talbot, such discussions would not benefit the situation at Port Talbot. The situation in Port Talbot is materially different to that in Scunthorpe.
