Water safety is a key priority in Wales, with a strong commitment to ensuring safe access to water for all. In May 2024, a partnership between Water Safety Wales and RoSPA was launched, and continues to be supported in 2025-26 by over £150,000 from the Welsh Government.
The funding supports education, awareness, and safety improvements at high-risk water locations, aligning with recommendations from the Senedd Petitions Committee and Mark Allen’s Law. Efforts include better signage, life-saving equipment, and regular risk assessments.
The Curriculum for Wales includes a mandatory Health and Well-being Area of Learning, which includes learning on safety; factors that influence decision-making, and how to respond appropriately in emergency situations. This supports learners to understand how to stay safe in and around water. These skills are important for the lifelong well-being of children and young people in Wales. New resources on water safety for schools are being developed by RoSPA and will be uploaded on Hwb.
