Does the Welsh Government intend to introduce legal obligations requiring developers who compromise on fire safety standards to provide direct financial compensation to affected tenants?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government
The Welsh Government has always been clear that we expect developers to rectify in-built fire safety issues in residential buildings constructed in the past 30 years.
The largest residential developers have signed a legally binding contract with Welsh Ministers, demonstrating their commitment to remediating the fire safety issues they are responsible for.
I meet regularly with the developers who have signed the contract. When I met them in June, I emphasised the importance of accelerating the pace of remediation works to reduce the burden on leaseholders. My officials closely monitor progress under the contract to ensure developers are delivering on their contractual obligations.
There are existing legal routes available to leaseholders who wish to seek financial redress. The Welsh Government provides funding to the Leasehold Advisory Service (LEASE) to offer free, impartial legal advice to leaseholders.
