Will the Cabinet Secretary provide an update on steps being taken to phase out the use of cueing methods in Welsh schools?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Education
The new Curriculum for Wales has never encouraged the teaching of picture cueing to decode words. Our guidance is very clear: learners should be taught to decode unknown words through the systematic teaching of phonics.
I am investing £13.2 million over the next 3 years in national support for professional learning for literacy which includes support for schools to develop approaches to teaching reading, based around the systematic teaching of phonics. This work will be informed by evidence and supported by our Literacy Expert Panel.
Building on our guidance, we are working with the Literacy Expert Panel to ensure further professional learning, support and resources are evidence based and clear on these points.
