What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the connection between Green GEN Cymru's proposals for a connection project in mid Wales, and the proposed new high-voltage onshore connection between north and south Wales?

Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning
The Welsh Government recognises the importance of long term strategic planning for the electricity grid to support decarbonisation, economic growth and energy security to 2050.
Together with the UK Government and Scottish Government, the Welsh Government have co-commissioned the National Energy System Operator to develop a Strategic Spatial Energy Plan for Great Britain. The plan will be published later in 2026. An update on that work including timelines is available at the following web-site: Strategic Spatial Energy Planning (SSEP) | National Energy System Operator
Alongside this, the Welsh Government is committed to supporting work at a regional level to support the delivery of the Local Area Energy Plans, which have all been published.
The Welsh Government is aware of work being undertaken by the National Energy System Operator to assess future electricity network requirements, including the potential need for new high‑voltage onshore connections within Wales.
The timing and publication of recommendations, including any proposed routes, is a matter for the National Energy System Operator and the relevant network companies, in line with their statutory duties and regulatory processes. Any future proposals would be subject to further development, consultation and appropriate planning and consenting processes.
The Welsh Government has not made any assessment of the connection between Green Gen Cymru’s proposals and the high voltage onshore connection between north south Wales. We have encouraged discussions between Green Gen Cymru and existing Distribution Network Operators and National Grid Electricity Transmission.
