How is the Welsh Government defining a school library?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language (Anna Brychan)
The planning of a programme to roll out library space across our primary schools forms part of our first 100‑day action plan. This commitment is also embedded within our wider Literacy and Numeracy Plan, which I intend to publish in the autumn.
Work is currently underway to develop detailed proposals, including how library provision will be defined, delivered and supported. It is, however, important to emphasise that our approach is focused on ensuring all learners have an effective space and adequate resources to support literacy development.
Our recently published Area Guidelines for Schools in Wales provide greater flexibility, allowing spaces to be thoughtfully designed and adapted to support a variety of learner needs, including the option for dedicated library areas. This enables schools to deliver high-quality reading provision in a way that reflects their local school environment and literacy ambitions.
