What representations has the Welsh Government made to Cardiff Council about the potential local economic damage that would be caused by a workplace parking charge?
Ateb
Atebwyd gan Deputy Minister for Transport (Mark Hooper)
The Welsh Government has not made representations to Cardiff Council specifically about the potential local economic imapcts that would be caused by a workplace parking charge.
Workplace parking levies are provided for under the Transport Act 2000; however, the detailed legislative framework required to enable such schemes has not been made in Wales. No decision has been taken to introduce the secondary legislation required to enable workplace parking levy schemes in Wales.
Should a local authority wish to pursue such a scheme in the future, Welsh Ministers would consider any legislative and approval requirements at the appropriate stage. This would include consideration of the available evidence, the deliverability of the proposal, the likely impacts on businesses, communities and the transport network, and the outcome of local consultation.
The Welsh Government recognises the important role businesses play in supporting economic growth and employment. We also recognise the importance of providing reliable and attractive alternatives to private car use through investment in public transport and measures that support sustainable travel choices.
