The impact of lower speed limits on air quality is one of the many metrics to be monitored as part of the 20 mph First Phase Settlement Studies.

The 20mph Task and Finish Group (TFG), chaired by Phil Jones completed their work and published their report. The report sets out the case for change and associated evidence, we have accepted all of the TFG recommendations and our response highlighting how each of them will be progressed can be found here, with a view for the 20mph default speed limit to come into force in April 2023.

Plans to reduce the national default speed limit in Wales from 30mph to 20mph on residential roads and busy pedestrian streets will form part of the Welsh Government’s legislative priorities for this year. The first phase of this change is being rolled out in eight communities across Wales this year in order to gather data and develop a best practice approach before the proposed full rollout in 2023. As part of this approach the Welsh Government has launched a consultation for people to have their say on the change before the necessary legislation is laid. The consultation will run for 12 weeks and will come to an end on 30 September.
