Question
What will the Minister do to ensure that rail services are more reliable, following the Rail User Survey from Transport Focus which ranks Transport for Wales as the worst rail operator for customer satisfaction in Britain?
Answer
Answered by Deputy Minister for Climate Change
A range of underlying challenges have impacted TfW rail performance. These include ageing and unreliable trains, industrial action in UK Government controlled companies and the ongoing financial pressures caused by Covid and inflation.
Recent performance metrics indicate that the situation has stabilised. Thanks to an £800m Welsh Government investment in rolling stock, 30% TfW of trains are brand new - providing a better experience for passengers and increased reliability. TfW introduce a new train into service every seven to 10 days, so the percentage of passenger journeys on new trains will continue to increase.
I regularly discuss performance with the Chair and CEO of TfW and I will continue to monitor performance closely and hold them to account for the services provided to customers.
