Question
What consideration does the Welsh Government give to the number of patents registered by Welsh universities when assessing the performance of higher education in Wales?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Further and Higher Education
Medr’s Strategic Plan, due to be published this month, will include a commitment to “identify how we can use data to measure and demonstrate the impact of the research and innovation that we fund and review how we share our knowledge and learning within communities”.
Medr will be taking forward work to identify relevant measures which reflect the wide range of impacts from research and innovation activities in higher education providers. This could include measures related to patents.
Medr’s Research Wales Innovation Fund (RWIF) also seeks to enable commercialisation activities in universities, with funding based on performance measures including income generation from intellectual property.
