Question
What financial assistance is given to British citizens to complete higher education in Wales if they have moved to Wales from South Africa in the past three years?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Education
Undergraduate statutory student support in Wales is governed by our Education (Student Support) (Wales) Regulations 2018, as amended.
Eligible students satisfying the residency and immigration criteria and undertaking a designated higher education course, can apply for student support from Student Finance Wales.
Universities in the UK are autonomous institutions and are responsible for assessing a student’s residency and immigration status in accordance with the relevant fees’ regulations for the purposes of charging fees; this is independent of the assessment for eligibility to statutory student support conducted by Student Finance Wales. The university can charge higher fees to those not eligible for home fees and who are deemed to be international students. Students are encouraged to discuss their fees status with their university.
