Question
What consideration has the Welsh Government given to changing planning guidance to ensure sports clubs are statutory consultees in the planning process?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning
The location of new development is set out in the development plan, so if sports clubs are to influence future development around their sites, they need to engage with plan preparation. Legislation requires planning authorities to reach out to voluntary groups when preparing their local development plans. Sports clubs can make their views known on emerging plans during the various consultation stages.
At the planning application stage, sports clubs can again make their views known. Where sports clubs adjoin proposed development sites, legislation requires applications to be publicised via a site notice or direct notification.
Applications are determined on the strength of the planning issues raised, so whether or not sports clubs are a statutory consultee, it will not affect the weight given to their representations.
