Question
How much of the study budget in Wales for doctors undertaking postgraduate training or professional development must be used to pay for mandatory training?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
Study leave budgets are held on an individual basis with an annual cap in expenditure. Applications to access the budget are made by individuals to the relevant employer. Welsh Government does not hold centrally the individual uptake statistics nor the distributional spend between courses. However Welsh Government, NHS Employers Wales and BMA Cymru have recently agreed new contractual terms for Resident Doctors in Wales. Under the terms of this new contract the individual budget cap will be significantly increased and we will agree in social partnership a move towards a system where individual study budget caps are solely for the purposes of discretionary training, with mandatory courses funded outside of the cap.
