Question
What assessment has the Welsh Government made of the impact of large numbers of similar small businesses, including barber shops, vape shops, and hand car washes, on the diversity and sustainability of local high streets?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning (Siân Gwenllian)
The Welsh Government has not undertaken a specific national assessment of how concentrations of certain types of small businesses affect the diversity and sustainability of local high streets. Decisions on mix of uses on the High Street are primarily for the local planning authorities.
The Welsh Government is establishing a Town Centre Taskforce, recognising the challenges facing high streets, to support their ongoing evolution into vibrant, mixed-use places, alongside wider regulatory measures and through current programmes such as Transforming Towns.
