Question
What discussions, if any, are taking place within the Welsh Government regarding the future structure of local Government in Wales, including reorganisation?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Minister for Local Government, Housing and Planning (Siân Gwenllian)
Reorganisation of the principal local authorities is not a priority for this government. Weare committed to working closely and positively with local government to ensure our local authorities are in the strongest position possible to provide the services on which we all depend.
We want to support and enable councils to find their own and shared solutions to long term sustainability by looking at how things can be done differently within existing structures, working with them and listening to them to understand what works. This includes continuing discussions on how regional arrangements are operating in practice, what further support may be needed, and how regional collaboration can support the delivery of local, regional and national priorities.
